Don’t let anxiety take over your life, take back control
Are you worrying excessively over everyday things?
Does constant worrying and fear prevent you from stepping out of your comfort zone?
Have you ever experienced racing thoughts, sweating, and/or dizziness?
Do you feel like your anxiety is limiting you from living your life?
Let’s be real for a second ok…..Dealing with anxiety can be overwhelming and downright exhausting. And it’s our guess that you are literally SICK AND TIRED of dealing with the damn anxiety monster! Because yes, that thing is a monster that has taken control and gotten in the way of you reclaiming your life! Yet, despite your best effort you can’t help the constant worrying and negative thoughts you have. When you think about routine things like going to work or kicking it with your girls, instead of focusing on the potential good that could come from it, you find yourself on guard and worrying about something bad happening. Rather than making decisions based on what makes you happy, you make decisions that will prevent the “worst” from occurring. You know this isn’t how you want to live, and while you realize that your fear and worry is irrational, you can’t seem to control it.
As lonesome as you may feel in your struggle with anxiety, you are not alone. According to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America, 40 Million people experience anxiety. In fact, Angela Neal-Barnett, a director of Kent State’s Program for Research on Anxiety Disorders among African-Americans said “Anxiety is the most common mental health disorder in the United States and impacts African-Americans at a higher rate than any other group — especially African-American women.”
Many Black women are affected and impacted by racism and sexism and may feel pressure from loved ones to society as a whole, to hide the anxiety and overwhelm they feel so they can continue to be “strong” or can avoid being considered the “angry Black woman.” stereotype.
Anxiety is a protective mechanism that is naturally triggered when we face danger, but it can also be triggered when there is no “real” danger. There are various types of anxiety including:
General Anxiety – This type of anxiety disorder can cause you to feel excessive, unrealistic worry and fear with little to no reason. Triggers can’t always be identified which can make it harder to manage.
Social Anxiety – This is an intense, overwhelming fear of being watched and judged by others. It can cause you to be extremely self-conscious about everyday social situations as you worry about being embarrassed or ridiculed. This can impact your ability to work and thrive in day to day life.
Separation Anxiety – Little kids aren’t the only ones who feel scared or anxious when a loved one leaves. Anyone can get separation anxiety disorder. If you do, you’ll feel very anxious or fearful when a person you’re close with leaves your sight. You’ll always worry that something bad may happen to your loved one.
Panic disorder – A sudden, intense fear that brings on a panic attack. During a panic attack you may break out in a sweat, have chest pain, and a pounding heartbeat. It can be very scary, as it can feel like you are choking or having a heart attack.
When dealing with anxiety sometimes something as small as running errands can be difficult. Imagine that moment when all you wanted to do was have a productive day checking things off your to do list. You’re armed and ready to conquer this day, positive attitude and all. And then, all of a sudden your mind starts to race, as you think of everything negative that could happen.
“What if the train breaks down?”
“What if they don’t have the garlic I need to make dinner?”
“What if there are so many people in the store, that it takes forever to check out?”
“What if I mess up dinner?”
“What if my partner or the kids don’t like what I prepare”
“Maybe this meal is too unhealthy…”
As you read these now, they may seem a little irrational, but in the moment they feel very real and terrifying. And the worst part is, your fear continues to grow as you continue to convince yourself that the worst has occurred. Anxiety can cause you to experience thoughts that seem unreasonable, but in the moment seem very realistic.
Along with these thoughts you may experience physical symptoms like dizziness, nausea, and headaches. Experiencing these mental and physical symptoms may make you feel embarrassed. Even if people show empathy and concern you can’t help but to feel like a burden around them. You don’t want them to feel like they have to watch you, so instead you isolate yourself.
